Can You Grow The Miracle Fruit Outdoors In Southern Califronia?

I would love to try the Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum). Does anyone know if you can grow it outdoors in Southern California?
Does it need to be a pot for those 2 weeks in December that get cold, or can it live and thrive in the ground?
And if you know of a nursery that stocks it I would much appreciate it.
