What Are Vegetables That Are Easy To Grow In Pots?

Posted by admin on February 28, 2010

I do not have a green thumb, but I do have a toddler who likes to garden. I am looking for vegetables that are easy to grow in outside pots. Ideas would be appreciated.

It’s great that you would encourage your child to garden. Gardening teaches children patience and perseverance. It also helps them to learn where their food comes from and the value of caring for something while it grows.
There are a couple of pages on our website about container gardening and gardening with children. You can visit our website at-http://www.gardening-at-the-crossroads.c…

Hi, there are many many you can grow. That’s what we do. We have a very small yard ,and no space for a garden. For a little one, I would suggest, Beans, carrots, radishes, potatoes, green peppers. Make sure you put allot of mulch around in the pots. And you have to water them a little more than if they were in the ground. If you want to really get into it, you could make a grow box out of wood. Make it as big, or as little as you want.Be sure to add some 2x4s on the bottom to keep it up off of the ground. We grow corn in the same type of box, and works out very well. I would plant things that grow quickly so your little one doesn’t get bored with it. Bye

Y ou need a sunny spot to grow any veggies or herbs. A cherry tomato is probably the most rewarding for a child and is possible with a large plastic, I’d guess at least a 3 gallon pot. Get a bag of good potting soil and you can get a tomato plant already started at home depot or Lowe’s or even walmart. I’d suggest getting a pack of radish seeds to plant around the tomato to let the child see the results of planting seeds. (radishes are fast growing and you’ll see the results of planting the seeds a week or so after planting)
    thanks and have fun

A container of five gal. size will support a Cherry Tomato plant, a few carrots planted close together (buy seeds for under a buck) and maybe a couple strawberry plants.
It’ll look full of color and most kids love “their own garden”. Being in a container will be great provided you start with a good soil mix like Miracle Grow.

The good ole favourites. Mixed lettuce, radishes, carrots, tomatoes, depends on time of year doesnt it. How about setting your toddler up with the good old mustard and cress, which you grow on a piece of flannel, (or kitchen paper). Or bean sprouts in a jam jar. Have fun.!

    Tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers.
I know it’s not a vegetable, but I’ve grown strawberries in pots, too.
