you could try patio tomatoes, or some pepper plants. I have had lots of luck with both in 5 gallon buckets. But I suggest you buy the spouts from your local nursery that have already started and transplant them.
On the balcony you can use large pots to grow almost anything. For climbing plants like beans and cucumbers, add some lattice work as scaffolding. If you have hooks for hanging plants you can also do hanging (upside down where the plant grows out of the bottom – ask for it at your lawn and garden store) tomato plants. Throw some herbs in to add aesthetic appeal and bring some more flavor to the kitchen.

just do a search on patio gardening good luck
My dad used to have a huge garden. As he got older it was too hard for him to work in his garden. We (wife and I ) came up with a “Garden in a pot”. A couple of tomato plants, 1 cherry tomato, and 1 beefsteak tomato plant. 2 Pepper plants, 2 egg plants, and believe it or not 2 corn stalks. They all grew very well (beefsteak tomatoes were still green by the end of the season) but everything else grew. A little Miracle-Gro now in then, and very little maintenance.
I suggest carrots or beats, maybe lettuce.
Your best is to grow herbs instead. You don’t want your plants overtaking your balcony.
How about a salad bowl? A variety of lettuces, a patio tomato, and if you have a trellis plant cucumbers. The cucumbers can take advantage of vertical space. There are tomato plants designed for container growing and are often called patio tomatoes.
tomatoes are probably the easiest, they can get semi big so be careful, but as far as most they are pretty easy and soooo good when homegrown!
Tomatoes grow well in containers…as do alot of different herbs, like chives, thyme and rosemary. You can also grow peas if you put up some chicken wire along the balconey’s railing for the peas to climb on. Hopefully your balconey gets a few hours of full morning sun for your plants to grow well.
tomatoes are very easy to grow and take up little space.
