Depending on how many tomatoes and vegetables you are talking about you could build some wooden planter boxes and filling them with soil and compost and planting in them.

Try a bucket or box garden, I grow all my veggies in 5 gallon buckets or large pots. I have a 4 foot by 4 foot heavy plastic box I plant in also. easy quick and transportable .

Build yourself some deep planter boxes, or buy some, fill with good type vegetable potting soil, and you are one your way. Veggies are easy to grow, and you don’t have to plant them that deep.

You’ll have to buy soil and transport it into your backyard… Make a good layer of it so you can grow stuff. Depending where you live some townships give away free soil and mulch from their leaf mulching program, etc… That they collect at the recycling centers, check that out. Also if you have a lot of trees in your backyard, mulch the leaves every fall, and let them rot, so you have soil in spring, or whenever it’s ready. Definitely works. We have piles of leaves in our backyard, plus grass clippings, makes great compost, which = soil!

    Haul in some sand.
Add organic matter like leaves or ground bark.
    Oh, move some stones first.

OH OH get one of those hanging tomato things. You hang them the soil is all contained in a cylinder and the plant grows downward – they are great – and interesting conversation pieces AND birds and squirels have trouble eating the tomatoes! I see them in garden catalogs all the time.
