I Would Like To Live With An Amish Family And Learn How To Grow Vegetables And Care For Farm Animals.?

Is this possible? I admire their simplistic life style and self reliance. In this day and age we are so disconnected and depend on others for our livelyhood. Our government is not dependable…i.e., Katrina..I would like to be less dependent and have more options and knowledge for taking care of my family…

Just learning how to live off the land is not the most important part of life the Amish would want you to learn. What they believe in spiritually is the root and the reason for how they live, including how to grow vegetable and care for farm animals.
Well, it is possible to join them, but they do not take in outsiders easily – they have a lot of restrictions and you might be better off trying to learn from some of the former Amish who live in the same areas but do not follow all the same restrictions. Check out the links below for more information – you will notice yours is one of the first ones under the frequently asked questions link (the first link).
There are tons of websites right here on the internet with information on living of the land. Try mother earth news and similar sites, or just google it. Yes the Amish set a wonderful example. What we often forget is how much hard work farming is. There was a time when you could raise chickens in your backyard but not anymore. Some places don’t even allow clothes lines! The government and businesses are making it harder for us to be independent.
