What pest problems might pop up when growing herbs in the south? What is the best way to combat them?

   You will have to keep the earwigs under control, and you will need a nice dry raised bed for things like rosemary, thyme and lavender that come from ard regions, but you can grow catmint, mint, parsley, basil, and a lot of other herbs right in the garden – they appreciate the moisture. Your parsley will be bi-enial, probably – it will work for one year (as long as the butterfly catepillars do not eat it all) and partway into the following year it will “bolt” – basically bloom and die. So just keep planting short-term annuals like Basil and bi-ennials like Parsley to be sure you have some on hand at all times. You should grow the mints in pieces of terra cotta drain tile so they do not spread like crazy down there and limit their seed-heads – trim most of them off.
