Some Hardy Herbs To Grow In The Garden?

Posted by admin on February 23, 2010

I’m looking for some hardy herbs to grow in big pots my backgarden. Ones that won’t need too much looking after. Not like coriander that needs someone fussing over it all the time.
I know mint is one that is pretty tough on it’s on with out any care and I’ll plant some of that. Any others?

Chives are super care free and VERY hardy. We have subzero winters and I am digging the things up every 2 years to split. My dog pees on one clump daily (dirty jerk) and the thing thrives???? Oregano is also quite hardy and carefree but not tolerant to pets. Basil, parsley, and Rosemary are pretty carefree, but not very cold hardy. Just remember to give Rosemary good draining soil. Dill will take over like an army and come back thicker every year. Sage is hardy and grows nicely in sun or partial shade but is not pet tolerant. Mints are also hardy, but sage and mint should be contained so that they do not take over. Mint will choke out an entire herb garden in a couple of years even in cold climes. Don’t forget the garlic :)
Edit: You could also grow Nasturtiums. The flowers are great in salads and you can pickle the seed pods and buds for ‘capers’ very peppery flavor.

I can’t even keep a Spider Plant alive and I managed to grow Rosemary! Unlike Basil it doesn’t take the huff when you pick its leaves! It continues to grow no matter how much you abuse it and it even looks pretty because it flowers in the summer. Use it in Italian cooking. It’s nice on bread instead of garlic. If you like nice smelling things which are easy to grow, get lavender. It looks after itself. You wouldn’t (normally) use it in cooking but it’s very pretty.

There are many herbs that can be grown in your backyard like mint, sage etc. I found this website which discusses few herbs with pics. Take a look! http://vikramkir.blogspot.com/2009/05/herbal-garden-pest-insects-flies.html

Rosemary doesn’t need much attention and mint like you say, is very hardy, and apparently according to my experience, almost imune to round-up! Watch out, it spreads!

Oregano and Rosemary do well and you can use them in so many dishes.
