Absolutely. Just be sure that none of the plants are too aggressive to take over the other or that one will not shade the other (unless it requires it). Also you can create pots combining vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers as long as they all compliment each other. There are also some plants that can help ward off pests, naturally so to protect the other plants in your pots. For example, Thyme wards of worms from cabbage. So you could even consider growing cabbage next to your thyme.
There is a great resource for companion planting, eco-boosting, watering and even plans on what to plant together. It’s an Ebook, Audiobook and includes Charts and Videos and it’s cheap right now.

Viola is not a problem – in fact it’s a herb. Nasturtiums are also good – you can eat the flowers. Bluebells are a bully and may take over the planter. Avoid poisonous plants like foxgloves, laburnum, lilac and euphorbia.

of course, it’s what cottage gardenings all about, years ago everything was mingled in the garden, potatoes, other veg etc. mingled with flowers and fruit, it’s what the old chocolate box paintings were all about, idillic!!!

I once met a couple who planted Aconitum napellus, monkshood, to brighten up their herb garden.

When the wife picked some green leaves for a salad she included a few monkshood leaves by mistake. It was enough to give them both very bad stomach upsets.
