What Type Of Fruit Plants Will Grow Well In A Wet Area That Also Gets Very Cold In The Winter?

Posted by admin on February 17, 2010

I have about 1/2 acre of pasture in the NE United States region which I want to plant with some type of fruit-the problem is that this area sometimes gets very wet. Does anyone know what I could successfully plant there, I want something that will be easy to get started and will survive the extremely cold wind and snow we get in the winter months. I don’t know much about blueberries or raspberries- can you make a suggestion. thanks.

Blackberries would be a good choice as they seem to like the cold and need alot of rain to help the fruits form.
Gooseberries, blue berries, white, blue and red currents would also do well.
Avoid soft fruits such as strawberries and peaches as they do not tolerate the wet and will go mildewy.
    Good luck.

I’d prefer to know more of the growing conditions, but… blueberries, elderberries for swampy type conditions
a little dryer than swamp.. plums, strawberries, raspberries

Blueberries or raspberries both would be good. Blueberries need slightly acidic soil, so you might want to test the pH level (cheap kits at home stores). Raspberries are hardy too. You could also try plum. Elderberries are also usually fond of moist/wet spots.
