What Kinds Of Fruit Can I Grow That Birds Won’t Eat?

I want to grow some fruit in my yard, but there are so many birds here. If I were to grow blueberries or strawberries they would get demolished by the birds. Are there any kinds of fruit that birds don’t touch? Do birds peck holes in apples? Any help would be great!
I have a massive (20×30) fig tree in my yard- it takes up the entire back of a two car garage- and Birds do not eat mine. It may depend on the fig- mine is mostly green when ripe, and I saw a show on fig growing that said if you buy a variety that remains green, the birds will think its not ripe.
I don’t think the question is “what kinds of fruit can I grow that birds won’t eat?”; it should be something like “what kinds of fruit can I grow which the native species of birds in my area will not eat?”
There are species which eat only one type of fruit, seed or what-not. Do some research on the types of native birds in your area and see what they eat. Then plant a fruit which is not listed, and you will notice a big change. This isn’t to say that they won’t eat the fruit you desire, but there should be a huge decrease on the amount of birds eating the fruit.
I don’t know of any fruits that birds avoid but I do have ideas for discouraging them. I’ve seen gardeners cover their trees and bushes in lightweight nets to make access to the fruits harder. I have also seen where you take old cd’s and DVDs and even those free trial cd-roms you get from aol and netzero, string them up with fishing line and hang them in your trees. The discs reflect light throughout the day and surprise the birds and sometimes squirrels into running away. Since they are light enough to blow about in the wind, the flashes are random and the animals can’t get used to any pattern.
Sorry! Birds eat fruit! Any fruit they can get at, they will eat. If you can find a fruit that is encased in a hard, bird-proof shell, then grow that. Try coconuts. If you live on a tropical island, that’ll be just right.
Depends on where you live. Citrus is usually not eaten by birds. Ocassionally mine is pecked some, but overall it is left alone. Figs get creamed by the birds. Apples? Probably.
Birds love berries…. Do what I have done…
I put up some wind chimes and decorations that spin… It keeps the birds at bay… (we have raspberries, strawberries, and currants)
We have an apple and pear tree in our backyard and the birds touch neither….
My parents have cherry trees and they do the same they hang chimes and ribbon on the trees to keep the birds away
Also, try giving them an alternative – a bird seed box and water bath… (we have both) and you can enjoy them as they feed on them and not on your fruits :~)
