can any expat tell me what kind of trees to grow for bearing edible fruit and how long it takes to get a harvest….also what to look for when buying the trees and where to buy in the udon thani area..many thanks

We live about 2 hours from Udon and we have
Mamuang (Mango) (สวาย) (There are two kinds of mango and one is better than the other.)
Maphraao (Coconut) (ต้นมะพร้าว)
Khanun (Jackfruit) (ต้นขนุน)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackfruit
Lychee (ต้นลิ้นจี่)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychee
Chompu (rose apple) (ต้นชมพู่)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syzygium_ja…
Ngoh (Rambutan) (ต้นเงาะ)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambutan
Kaffir Lime (makrud, Issan:huut) (มะกรูด) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaffir_lime
It takes about three years before most start producing fruit. Just go to a good nursery. We had a couple that died but they were replaced. And plant a few extra for the neighbors.
I live about 100 KM West of Udon, and planted 2 Mango tree’s about 6 years ago and another four 3 years ago, all have fruit now, though we planted them more for shade and aesthetic value.
The first 2 that get the most water have a lot of growth but little fruit. The later tree’s all have fruit, but last year, the fruit split,
Like any fruit tree’s they have to be properly cared for and planted the right distance apart. Ours with hind site are too close together.
I recommend Mango trees for a garden, , some other fruit tree’s just grow too big
If you plant fruit trees in udon, your neighbors will come and steal all your fruits.
Best to go to Talaat Ban Hoy, Center point, Talaat Nong Bua and pay for fruits, its only cheap!
By the time any fruit trees are ready for harvesting fruit, it will be many years, and your neighbors will beat you to it, even if you have guard dogs. Your dogs may get poisined too, all for some stupid bananas or mangos
