Suggestions On Trimming And Helping Fruit Trees Grow?

Posted by admin on February 18, 2010

I recently bought a house and property with 4 fruit trees in the yard. I know one of them is a pear tree but I am not sure what the others are. The pear tree’s branches are very brittle and fall off frequently. I know they probably haven’tbeen taken care of in a long time but I would like to bring them back and be able to use the fruit from them. Suggestions?

well where do you live??? let me know and i may be able to help you a bunch… but i would suggest fertilization and you may want to put salt around the base of the trees… they like it… oh and when it bares fruit you want to pick the fruit in the morning or evening… when the sun is low… they will be sweeter… and better… let me know all the information you have and i will get back to you on it… hope what i wrote helped… feel free to message me anytime…

My pear tree has already lost all its leaves. If yours has, you may want to wait until spring when it leafs out to see what branches are dead and which are still living. Cut out all dead branches. When pruning the live branches remove no more than 20% of live so the tree still has enough leaves to bring in CO2 and sunshine for food. Cut branches at an angle so water won’t settle in the centers and cut to allow air to circulate thru out the tree. Cut branches that touch or cross other branches. After awhile they will rub and break into the bark and disease will get in.
Use the winter time to mark which branches to cut in the spring. You have a good chance to see the “skeleton” now. Some fruit only grow on new wood and some on old wood and still others on both. If your pear is just on new wood you may just need to trim the taller branches down to start new branch growth, at a lower level to gain access to fruit.

Depending on how old they are,I would trim them back to enable new growth, with the Pear tree I would cut off those branches that are brittle,.
Sometimes you have to be brave and cut back quite severe Is there a Garden Nursery/Centre or similar in your area,if so pop in and have chat…I’m sure they can help…
They need plenty of citrus food in spring and just before fruit bearing to help them…cheers happy fruiting…
