Can I Take Seed From Veg And Grow Into Plant And Fruit Again?

I am starting up a huge veg garden and have brought enough seed for the first year but as we are going self sufficient, I wondered if I took the seed from the veg eg. courgette and cucumber that I had grown, would it grow into another veg plant?!! Do you have to do something special with the seed I have got from the veg? What about veg that dont obviously have seed eg. brocolli, carrott, parsnip? Can anyone recommend a good book or website? Thank you.
Yes and no. Much of the seed that you buy will produce good plants but the seed from those plants may not produce the same variety There may be an element of cross-pollination which will aftect the progeny of the plant. It is all to do with selective breeding. Tomatoes will work very well as well as beans but it is always worth trying anything. Who knows? You may discover a newer and tastier version of something
Yes you can but need to let it dry for quite long period and only nurseries or shops selling seeds will do that for that period at large amount.

Yes you can, and to repeat what has already been said your new plant will very likely not be the same as the original plant since it more than likely was a hybridize variety unless you are like me and grow heirloom varieties. since I grow heirlooms I always save my seeds and plant the next year. I also get volunteers. seams to always be my cucumbers I seam to always miss one of the cucs and it rots there and the next year I get a new plat that I did not plant there , its all good though. I use a variety of seed catalogs and if you do a google search on seed catalogs you will find loads og seeds, and you can even choose from large and small farmers, as well as oganic and factory style sources to choose from. They will be happy to send out a catalog for you to look through.
Same comment about offspring plants being true to their parents as previous contributor. Some plants are F1 hybrids so don’t expect success in reproducing those.
Brassicas and root crop plants do seed – if you leave them in the ground or don’t cut them, they will flower, but seeds are very cheap if you buy common varieties.
If you are buying garden packets instead of in bulk from a seed merchant, look out for Woolworths and Wilkinsons in Feb/March when they usually do BOGOFs on their seeds.
umm, most the time it does work, I have taken the leaves of a vegetable and planted that and it worked, and I know pumpkin seeds work, but I have never tried any other fruits, hope this helps!
You can get multiple harvests from one set of seeds but the seeds we buy today are hybrids. When you continue the generation sometimes your production goes down.
I have what we call “volunteer” crops every year because when a veggie goes old or rotten I just throw it on the ground in the same vicinity as its family. The next year plants grow I do not plant……..or expect. This is cool but my main garden is planted using on-line seed companies.
